Willkie or Won't We: 1940 Republican National Convention
It is June of 1940. Hitler is rampaging through the Democratic countries of Europe, the Great Depression continues to harm America’s beleaguered lower class, and Franklin Deleno Roosevelt seems poised to become the first person in US history to run for a third consecutive term in the White House. Meanwhile, in the Philadelphia Convention Hall, the Republican National Convention is ongoing. Riotous chants of “We want Willkie!” have been raining from the rafters for hours, but the party’s old guard continues to rally behind “Mr. Republican,” Robert Taft. While British interference and Communist bomb plots threaten the security of the nomination process, questions surrounding European intervention, New Deal policies, and trust busting divide Republican leaders. If the party can’t get its act together and find some unity fast, Roosevelt and the Democrats will make quick work of whoever they end up nominating. Whose name will top the ticket in November? Will the rabble of the rafters get Willkie as they wish, or will Taft top him? Only the convention can decide.
