East China Sea Crisis, 2012

Bring up the discussion of the Diaoyu and Senkaku Islands with a person in China, Japan, or Taiwan, and you are certain to receive an impassioned response. Each country has historical claims to the islands and believes the islands belong in their respective jurisdictions. In an era of increased nationalism in Japan, China, and Taiwan, as well as increasingly hawkish policies emerging from the beginnings of Xi Jinping’s China and Shinzo Abe’s Japan, clash is inevitable.

Our crisis begins in the fall of 2012, the culmination of the tension between these three great nations. The United States plays a role, and conflicts of interest emerge to further complicate the situation. Stakes are High and Tension is at its breaking point.

Representatives will work tirelessly to diffuse the tensions while seeking to achieve their own goals. Failure to create foreign policy will result in catastrophic damage that will take decades to repair. War is not something we encourage delegations to take lightly in this committee. Delegates must cooperate and find ways to advance their individual nation’s agenda while avoiding war and loss of life. Many may also benefit from covertly exploiting their positions to advance their individual agenda.

The fate of the region, and more ominously, the world as we know it is in your hands. Go forth and change it for the better!
