Crisis: Tiananmen Square

The 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests and the subsequent bloody crackdown known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre is the most recent large scale protest in Mainland China. The series of student protests called for democracy, free speech, and education reform in China, and escalated rapidly in the course of a month. Mass scale public occupations, like the occupation of Tiananmen Square and hunger strikes, were carried out all over China, headlined by university students and intellectuals. The events have lasting impacts on China today, with mass censorship still in place. In this committee, delegates will represent actors of the Chinese government and the student organizations. They will either oppose or support the students protests. Their meeting occurs before the declaration of martial law in history, and they will have to work together towards possible resolutions of the national crisis.
